Tokens of Love
One of the grandest monuments to love is the Taj Mahal in India, built by the Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth after 17 years of happy marriage. Richard Burton showered Elizabeth Taylor with jewels during their two marriages, including the Krupp diamond, which cost $305,000 in 1961 and the 69.42 karat Cartier diamond, which cost $1,000,000 in 1969, and for which he outbid Aristotle Onassis. Most of us give more modest tokens, usually jewelry or flowers. The practice of giving a diamond engagement ring as a token of love is not a new thing; in fact you may be surprised to know that this practice dates back to 2nd century BC, during the Roman Empire.
The diamond engagement ring symbolizes purity, strength and sheer devotion to your partner. It is called the 'king of gems' and rightly so, as it dazzles and sparkles its way to the top of all other ornamental materials. The word diamond fills the mind with a multitude of concepts and colorful images. You may choose other gemstones for your engagement ring. Rubies symbolize passion, emeralds are for success, sapphires for wisdom. But you will probably choose your gemstone for the color that most suits you - maybe matches the color of your lover's eyes. Whatever you decide, choosing your ring as a token of love is a very personal thing. |
