Jacko - A Shaggy Dog

By Sheila Cossons

Jacko was given to us as a belated wedding present soon after we moved out of a flat into a house with a garden.

His pedigree was genuine Heinz hound – we were told that his mother was a Labrador/sheepdog cross and her two best friends had been a Labrador and a sheepdog – clearly she had had some other boyfriend. Suffice it to say that Jacko was golden brown with very long fur. He had an aristocratic appearance with bright alert eyes and a long tail which could do more damage than a herd of elephants.

He was fairly small, but looked bigger because he was so hairy. We didn’t realise how small he was until the day we fitted a cat flap into the kitchen door and found Jacko using it. On another occasion, when he accidentally fell into the river, the small, bedraggled, rat-like creature that struggled out of the water bore no resemblance whatever to the large shaggy dog that had fallen in.

Apart from his unruly tail, Jacko had few faults. He had one phase of raiding other people's dustbins. He was always bringing home smelly bones, but one day he trotted proudly up the drive trailing a pink, lace-up corset behind him. Perhaps he thought the whale bones would be tasty.

Another decidedly mischievous trick was to steal my mother's false teeth every time she came to stay. Finding the plate rather uncomfortable, she was in the habit of putting them in the pocket of her overall while working round the house. Somehow or other, Jacko always managed to find them and bear them off to his bed in the kitchen, or worse still bury them in the garden.

The biggest problem we had with Jacko was his pyrotechnophobia (if there is such a word). Fear of fireworks is a common problem with dogs, but knowing this does not make it any easier to bear. We tried tranquillisers but although these stopped him rushing round the house trying to get out and scratching all the doors, it did not stop his fear. You could see from his eyes that he was terrified but because of the pills, he didn't have the strength to stand up.

As wedding presents go, Jacko was the most endearing and enduring. The linen wore out, the china was broken, electrical goods were replaced by more modern equipment, but Jacko was a constant delight for fifteen years. Even now he still lives on in our hearts.
