Agoraphobia

By Sheila Cossons

How do you cope with someone with agoraphobia. It is an extremely debilitating illness, not least for the sufferer's partner. Is it best to force them to go out - or let them stay at home in peace which is what they seem to want?

Advice from friends, or health professionals, is not very helpful. How do you get the agoraphobic to go out to visit a health professional? Doctors will not talk to the partner about the sufferer's condition quoting patient confidentiality. Friends will talk about it but what do they know? Unless you have experienced the frustration of trying to get someone with agoraphobia to go out anywhere, you cannot understand. Even the rest of the family do not understand why he will not go to visit them - see the grandchildren - go to their weddings or even funerals.

Well, from experience, I would say the answer is to leave them in peace - go out and enjoy your own life and let the sufferer stay at home on his own.

As you will have guessed, this intel is from a very frustrated spouse.
