A Laugh and a Smile

Aren't babies clever - from only a few weeks old a baby knows how to smile and laugh. It is an instinctive spontaneous expression of goodwill because he is warm and well fed and knows he is loved.

They say laughter is the best medicine. It is the best cure for a fit of depression - and who has not suffered fits of depression from time to time. Sometimes it is very hard to laugh when you feel like that - you need outside stimulation such as a funny film or television programme.

Sometimes we laugh because we are embarrased. I quote Lord Byron 'And if I laugh at any mortal thing/'Tis that I may not weep.'
Sometimes we laugh in spite of ourselves because laughing is infectious. There is a toy that is a laughing bag. If you set it off in a room people start to laugh against their will. You can try very hard not to laugh, but cannot help yourself. Actors too have difficulty if someone makes them laugh when they should be serious.

There are different kinds of laughter and you usually laugh in a different ways for different reasons. The straightforward belly laugh 'Ha-ha' shows we are happy and full of joie de vivre. But there is another nastier sort of laughter when we are laughing about someone in a gloating way. This is usually sounds like 'He-he' perhaps more properly called a Smirk. We do this with lips pressed together when we are enjoying someone else's discomfiture. Then there is the 'Ho-ho' sort of laugh which says 'I do not really believe what you are telling me'.

Ken Dodd is an English comedian who seems to be able to make people laugh - just hum his song "Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I possess is more than my share of happiness." He tells us to "exercise our chuckle muscles" and he is right. Just thinking of Ken Dodd can make my chuckle muscles start quivering.

The word 'laugh' can be used in different ways too and can have double meanings. A great joke by another Englishman who became very rich and famous as a comedian goes like this:
"My friends laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian - they're not laughing now"

So there are many ways to laugh - and many reasons to laugh. Just remember all the good things in life and how lucky you are to live in this amazing world.
